Helen Lorraine Martin

August 30, 1929 — October 5, 2017

Helen Lorraine Martin, 88, West Fargo, passed away October 5, 2017, at Sanford Hospital-Fargo.

She was born August 30, 1929, in Bismarck, North Dakota, to George and Ernestine Naumann, who farmed near Temvik, North Dakota. After graduating from Linton High School as Valedictorian in 1947, she attended North Dakota Agricultural College (now NDSU) for two years-where she met George A. Martin, whom she married in 1948. They had two children, Jack and Julie.

A "working mom" in an era when it was somewhat uncommon, Helen worked in the business offices of Buck Piano, Daveau Music, Dakota Plate Glass, Advanced Structures, and lastly Northern Improvement, where she retired after 20 years in 1995.

Helen is survived by her son Jon "Jack" S. Martin (Jane Miller), Fargo, daughter Julie Ann Martin, Shoreham, Minnesota; and granddaughter and loving caregiver Mikaela Jayne Martin, Fargo.

Helen will be fondly remembered by her dedicated caregivers Cullen Hoglund and Dawndi Ulmer. Helen and Dawndi became dear friends over the past two years. "I feel so fortunate to have met her and learned from her. Helen taught me patience and how to slow down and enjoy life. I feel I've lost a very good friend," said Dawndi.

She was preceded in death by brothers: Earl G. Naumann, who was killed Christmas Day, 1944, while serving in the U.S. Army in Belgium during World War II; Donald N. Naumann, Linton, ND; and half-brother Merle Anderson.

Helen will be remembered as a strong, independent woman, with a wry sense of humor and a sharp wit.

An extremely hard worker her entire career, she still found time to pursue her passion for gardening, and her floral displays were the envy of the neighborhood when she lived in south Fargo. A woman of high intelligence, she loved a challenging word puzzle, and watching "Jeopardy" regularly on television. She also enjoyed sewing, collecting teapots, piano musicand chocolate.

But her greatest joy was her unsurpassed love of animals; rescuing and helping many homeless and injured animals. Her constant companions were her beloved cats; and the family requests that memorials and contributions be sent to:
