Gloria Luick, age 98, of Eventide Care Center, Moorhead, MN, and formerly of Ottertail, MN, passed away from complications of Alzheimer's on Tuesday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. in her room at the Care Center. She had just been brought into Hospice of the Red River Valley on Monday, May 8.

Gloria was born February 21, 1925, on the family farm near Cathay, ND, in Wells County. She was the 5th child of 6 born to Paul and Emma Seidel. Gloria attended grade school in the country near Cathay and graduated from Fessenden High School in 1942.

She always planned on attending college but first worked in the Rations Department in Bismarck, ND, during the war. From there, she moved on to college at NDSU (NDAC) in Fargo and majored in Home Economics. There, she met her future husband, LaVerne "Vern" Luick. Gloria taught school in Browns Valley, MN. She always talked about her sophomore Biology class and the rowdy boys in the class. After one year of teaching, Vern and Gloria were wed on July 31, 1949, and settled down on the family Luick farm 9.5 miles southwest of Fairmount, ND.

Gloria was an occasional substitute teacher at the Lamars Township Grade School, where her children attended. She also served as an Election Judge at the Lamars Hall polling site. Later, she worked as a secretary at the Ottertail County Courthouse.

Gloria was an avid sewer and sewed matching dresses for her and her daughters. She was born to sing, and in her younger days sang with her three sisters and later sang in her church choir at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt, SD. She was also a 4-H leader and avid Bridge player for many years. Gloria was a great cook and could whip up anything at a moment's notice. Mostly, she was a wonderful wife and mother who cared deeply for her family.

In the fall of 1981, Vern and Gloria moved permanently to their lake home in Ottertail Lake, MN. They opened the Pier 38 restaurant, which was destroyed by fire in the spring of 1984 but was subsequently rebuilt and operated until the fall of 1987.

Gloria is survived by her three children, David Luick (Janet), Rochester, MN; Barb (Brad) Worner, Devils Lake, ND; and Debra Luick, Fargo, ND. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Christopher Luick, Amanda Lampi (Jon), Brianne Langton (Neil), Lacy Tarang (Brian); and seven great-grandchildren, Jaylin Hochhalter, Weslie Langton, Max Langton, Hobey Langton, Kemper Tarang, Paisley Tarang, and Loghan Tarang.

Preceding Gloria in death were her parents; her husband; siblings, Garlen Seidel, Arnold Seidel, Melva Weber, Fern Adkins, and Vila Sill; and one granddaughter, Crystal Luick.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following: Eventide Care Center, Hospice of the Red River Valley, and Olivet Lutheran Church.
