Glady Cates

November 3, 1911 — December 22, 2006

Glady M. Cates, 95, of Holladay, Utah, (formerly of Fargo, ND) died Monday, January 22, 2007, at St. Mark’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Glady was born November 3, 1911, in Fargo, ND, where she grew up with her other 11 siblings. She graduated from the Interstate Business College and, while in her late 70’s, attended classes at North Dakota State University. During the 1930’s, she worked for the Knight Printing Company and Thordis Printing in Fargo. She loved to dance! She first studied dance at the Marie Early Dance School in Fargo and later became a performer and ballet instructor for the Marian Risk School of Dance. She participated in the Bison Brevities and in dance programs for the Pilot’s Association, Science Teacher’s Convention and was in numerous theatre performances such as “Swan Lake” and “Morning” by Edvard Grieg. In 1967, she married Bill Cates in South Dakota. They spent the next 40 years in the Park Rapids, Minnesota, area. Glady assisted Bill with their crop dusting business. She provided ground support, driving at break neck speeds down country dirt roads with the dangerous chemicals and fuel. They also enjoyed many hours lake hopping in their piper cub on floats and taking many boat rides on Blue Lake. She was always careful about what she ate and loved being active. She enjoyed skiing and spent many hours shooshing with her children down the slopes of Val Chatel Ski Resort. She loved nature, gardening and was a crack shot with her .410 shot gun. She loved her family. She loved her children! She was full of zest for life. She was smart and talented, happy, generous to a fault. She was compassionate. She was sharp minded to the very end. She was so brave; never afraid to stand up and speak out to defend what was right. She had great faith in God and her Savior, Jesus, and of all the gifts she gave her children, this faith was the greatest! She was very loved and will be so missed. She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Dean, Fargo, ND; Virginia Belle, Riverdale, MD; and a brother, Arthur Heaton, Laparte, TX; two grandsons, Chuck Wilson, Fargo, ND; and Tim Wilson, Park Rapids, MN; one granddaughter, Lolly Miller, Holladay, UT; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; daughter, Carol Wilson; and son, Ronald Colby; brothers, Tom, Fred, Mel, Warren, and Robert; and sisters, Agnes, Eleanor and Mae. Funeral Service: Saturday, January 27, 2007, at 2:00 PM, at Hanson-Runsvold Chapel, Fargo, ND. Visitation: One hour prior to the service at Hanson-Runsvold. Burial: Monday, January 29, 2007, at Noon, at Lake Emma Cemetery, Park Rapids, MN.
