Gerald Robert Harrington, 81, passed away under the care of hospice on August 2, 2023, at Bethany Retirement Living in Fargo. Jerry was born on September 20, 1941, to Burt and Ruth Harrington in Cooperstown, ND. He grew up in Sutton, ND, with his two younger brothers, Roger and Richard. It was during this time he developed his love of playing cards, especially pinochle, and his sense of humor.
He became a father to his son, Ronn Harrington, during his first marriage. Jerry met Sharon, the love of his life, and they married in July 1980. They made their home in rural Sutton, where they lovingly raised their daughters Tina, Natalie, and Angie. Jerry spent many years enjoying going to all their activities and being a part of those early years. During that time, he was actively involved in their school, serving as a school board member.
During his life, Jerry had numerous careers, including farming, being a guardsman in the North Dakota Army National Guard, auto and farm mechanic, Mental Health Care Specialist at the North Dakota State Hospital, and a family-based service provider for at-risk adolescents at Lutheran Social Services. In 2004, he was recognized with an award for his outstanding contribution to serving North Dakota’s children and families by Lutheran Social Services.
Jerry was a member of The Independent Order of Oddfellows and served as both the Nobel Grand of his local chapter and rose to Grand Master for the state of North Dakota. Jerry had his private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying to lodge meetings and with his family. Gatherings almost always included a spirited game of cards and lots of laughter with all of his extended family.
Jerry and Sharon moved to Wheatland, ND, in 2007 to be closer to their daughters and their families. Moorhead, MN, became their home in 2013, where Jerry fully settled into retired life. He truly enjoyed being a grandpa and loved spending time with his wife, daughters, and grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Sharon, Moorhead, MN; daughters Tina (Ben) Lecy – grandchildren Tianna, Connor, Tanner, and Emily, Twin Valley, MN; Natalie (Josh) Nielsen – granddaughters Riley and Cora, Kindred, ND; Angie (Scott) Heiden – grandson Caleb, West Fargo, ND. He is also survived by his brother, Richard (Cathy) Harrington, Richmond, KY, as well as many extended family members.
Jerry was preceded in death by his son, Ronn Harrington; brothers, David and Roger Harrington; parents, Burt and Ruth Harrington; grandparents, Violet Taylor, George and Sadie Harrington.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation for the wonderful staff at Bethany Retirement Living. Jerry received amazing care from numerous people, and they were able to make this his second home. Also, our heartfelt gratitude goes to Hospice of the Red River Valley, as they were exceptional at making sure he was comfortable during his last days.
