George Allen Berg, age 76, of Fargo, ND, died in Fargo Sanford Hospital on May 18, 2022. The funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 24, at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo.
George was born in Fargo, ND, on February 21, 1946, to Alfred N. and Alice H. (Haslerud) Berg. He graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1964 and from NDSU in 1968. He was employed by Kindred State Bank, Eid-Co., Super Valu Warehouse office, and Nodak Supply office. He was a perfectionist in accounting and expected no less from each person he encountered, whatever their line of work. He was very conservative and a strong Republican.
George was a loyal friend and loved to visit, whether in person or on his rotary dial phone. He enjoyed meeting new people and could almost always find a connection with that person. A joy in his life was vacationing (and, on one occasion, working) in Hawaii. Each time he talked about Hawaii, it brought a smile to his face.
He was proud of the fact that he had no computer or cell phone. He loved to go on daily walks downtown with scheduled stops and made many acquaintances this way. He also loved to ride his bike in the neighborhoods near downtown and put many miles on his bike as well as visiting friends along his routes. This all came to a halt a few years ago because of medical problems.
George loved to listen to the First Lutheran Church services on the radio. He got the bulletin every week and called the church office frequently to offer his own contributions.
He could remember a myriad of details and recount humorous and non-humorous events. He will be greatly missed for his knowledge of friends, relatives, and “connections.” His memory of names and numbers was super to the end.
George is survived by his brother, Donald James (Ellen) Berg, Brookings, SD, and his sister, Mary Alice (Ron) Bergan, Fargo, ND. He had an “adopted” grandson Brett Hershberger and called Nik Gruber, a good friend, his grandson. George also had many cousins.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James Allen, who died at the age of two years in 1941, and his grandmother Josephine Haslerud in 1968, who lived with the family.
