Gary Stolzenberg

Gary Eric Stolzenberg, 70, died Thursday, September 30, 2010 in Fargo, North Dakota. He was born in Hempstead, New York on December 1, 1939 and graduated from Riverhead High School in Riverhead, New York. He received a B.S. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Chemistry in 1962 and then received a PhD in Biochemistry from Kansas State University in 1968. He spent a summer in 1966 as a student intern in Fargo at the newly opened USDA Metabolism and Radiation Laboratory and then returned as a Research Scientist in 1969 doing pesticide degradation studies, organic structure analysis, occupational safety and radiation protection. After retiring from USDA in 1995, he held some short-term positions with Northwest Technical College (East Grand Forks, N.D) and NDSU Entomology Department. Then, in 1996, he joined the NDSU Chemistry Department as a Lecturer working mostly in the under- graduate organic lab program. He also participated in some out-reach work, especially on an N.I.H. grant for the Tribal Colleges in ND to improve chemistry instruction for Native Americans preparing for biomedical careers. His 38 year association with NDSU also included serving as the NDSU Acting Safety Officer from 2002-2007. After his second retirement (from NDSU in 2006), he increased his voluntary activities by serving in various positions in the Lower Crow Wing Lakes Association, South Island Lake Association, Headwaters Chapter of the Minnesota Forestry Association and the Hubbard County Coalition of Lakes Association. He also (in Fargo) continued to volunteer at the NDSU Chemistry Department and served on the board of the Family Health Care Center. He is survived by his wife Rosa and brother, Norman (Susan) of Southwick, Massachusetts, nieces Suzanne Nurkin (Charlotte, NC), Lisa Terrell (Melbourne, Fla), Tric Stolzenberg (Washington, DC) and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Vary Stolzenberg. A memorial service will be held at the Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home (215 7th St. South, Fargo, ND) on October 22, 2010 at 2 PM.
