Gary Wayne Moran, 77, Fargo, died on Friday, December 13, 2019, at Eventide on 8th, Moorhead.
Gary was born September 1, 1942, in Maddock, ND, to John and Lillian (Jacobsen) Moran. He graduated from Maddock High School in 1960 before attending North Dakota State University to study agriculture and then received his Master’s in Communication from Iowa State University.
He was an Associate Editor at The Dakota Farmer magazine before working for 33 years at NDSU, most of that time working in Agricultural Communications.
Gary was an avid hunter and trap and skeet shooter. He helped organize the North Dakota Skeet Shooting Association and was president for 11 years. He served as North Dakota’s representative on the National Skeet Shooting Association for 5 years and was the second person inducted into the North Dakota Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame in 2001. He was a voracious reader and was especially focused on reading about the history of World War II. This love of reading and history made him a much pursued trivia expert and his son is still recovering from many embarrassing Trivial Pursuit beatings. He was involved in Toastmasters for many years and was elected District Governor in 1977. Gary loved animals and was a longtime supporter of Ducks Unlimited and was a charter member of the Red River Zoological Society and a docent at the zoo. He was an avid traveler and remembered most fondly his trips to Normandy Beach, visiting family in Norway and his trips to visit his daughter-in-law’s family in Ireland.
He was preceded in death by his father John. He is survived by his 108-year-old mother Lillian, wife Sandy, son Eric, daughter-in-law Sheenagh (McCarthy), and grandson Séamus.
