Fern Niles, 96, of Fargo died Friday, October 5, 2012, at Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo, ND.
Fern Anna Juliet Fredrickson was born May 27, 1916 to Julius and Freda (Nelson) Fredrickson in Moorhead, MN.
She attended schools in Grand Forks, ND, Moorhead, MN, and Sioux Falls, SD. In 1937, she graduated from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing, Fargo, ND. The highlight of her nursing career was caring for the Brown quadruplets who were born prematurely, and were kept at the hospital until they were able to return home. She was pictured with the preemies in national newspapers.
She married John L. Niles on October 18, 1941. Following 22 years residence in Mandan, ND, they moved to Fargo where they remained until their respective deaths.
Fern was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Fargo, was a member of Chapter AE of the PEO Sisterhood and volunteered for 23 years at Sanford Hospital. She also volunteered for numerous charitable organizations in Fargo.
She is survived by four of her six children: two daughters, Judith Niles of Louisville, KY and Deborah (William) Roufs, Fergus Falls, MN; two sons, Robert (Peggy) Niles of Oro Valley, AZ and Chad (Mary) Niles of Mesa, AZ; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Niles; daughter, Lorrie Niles and son, John Niles; three brothers, Neil, Lloyd and Gerald Fredrickson; and sister Lorraine Lahren.
Memorial Service: Friday, October 12, 2012, 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, Fargo, ND.
Her body has been donated to the UND Medical School and then will be cremated and interred in
Riverside Cemetery in Fargo, alongside her husband and daughter.
