Hazel “Evelyn” (Stenslie) Hegvick went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at the age of 94.
The third of five children, Evelyn was born on December 27, 1920 to Bereth “Pauline” and Peder “Oscar” Stenslie near Pekin, North Dakota. She attended elementary and high school in Pekin, graduating in 1938. Always determined, Evelyn worked her way through Mayville College by assisting professors and helping in the college dining room, ultimately earning her teaching certificate. Pursuing her passion for sharing knowledge, Evelyn spent two years teaching a variety of grade levels in two different one-room schoolhouses in Nelson County, North Dakota. Answering her country’s call to action during World War II, Evelyn enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve (WAVES) where she assisted the Navy Chaplain Corps in New York. Evelyn returned home and on July 27, 1946, Evelyn married George Hegvick. The two were long time residents of North Fargo and were active members of the Y Dance Club and could often be found entertaining in their home as they enjoyed the company of others. George and Evelyn had one daughter, Mary. Evelyn spent many happy years as a mother and grandmother, was involved in many church activities throughout the years and still found time to excel as an agent with the Royal Neighbors of America.
Evelyn always found joy in providing food and entertainment for her friends and family and would always have something to offer her guests, even in her final days at Rosewood on Broadway.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; sisters, Benora and Olga; brother, Art; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Mary (Randy) Kallod; grandchildren, Ashley, James, and Annaliese; brother, Clifford (Mildred) Stenslie; and many near and dear nieces and nephews.
