Evelyn Ekern, 89, Fargo, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Sanford Health, Fargo.
Evelyn Bowman Britt was born in Lumberton, North Carolina, June 16, 1924. She graduated from Meredith College, Raleigh, North Carolina. While attending Meredith College, she met Carl R. Ekern Jr. of Fargo, who was a Naval Officer attending North Carolina State University in Raleigh. They were married April 2, 1946 in Lake Charles, Louisiana where Carl was stationed. Upon his release from the Navy, they returned to Fargo.
At the time of World War II, during her college summer vacations, Evelyn worked in Washington, D.C. at War Agencies. After her marriage, she worked briefly at the Veterans Administration in Fargo. She and Carl enjoyed their winter home in Sun Lakes, AZ.
She is a past member of Junior League, Drama section of the Fine Arts Club, Chapter Y, P.E.O., Daughters of American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, Hereditary Register of U.S., assisted at the Opportunity School, and appeared in FM Community Theatre productions in its second year of operation. She was an avid golfer and bridge player.
Evelyn is survived by her son, Carl Robert Ekern, III; twin daughters, Linda Ekern, and Laura (Ken) Lougheed; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Judge Samuel E. Britt, Lumberton, N.C.
