Eunice Nasset, 92, of Fargo, ND, died Sunday, January 31, 2010, at her home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Eunice Elaine Erickson was born June 3, 1917, to Charles and Emma (Magnuson) Erickson in New England, North Dakota. Eunice attended a one room school house through the 8th grade, Dickinson High School and Grafton High School. Eunice received her “Standard” from Dickinson State College in 1938, and her Education Degree from Central Washington College of Education in Ellensburg, Washington, in 1941. Eunice was named “Who’s Who” at Model High in Dickinson and played women’s basketball for Grafton High School. Eunice was a Homecoming Princess at Central Washington College of Education in 1941. Eunice and Erling Nasset were united in marriage June 5, 1943. WWII separated the young couple for 33 months. While Erling was serving in the Army Air Corp, Eunice began teaching 1st Grade in Washington. After school and during the summer, she worked as a nurse’s assistant due to the shortage of nurses. She enjoyed nursing but her true love was the classroom. Eunice and Erling returned to North Dakota in 1946, where Eunice taught in Slope County, Bismarck and Fargo. Her students included four younger siblings, two sons and a nephew. Eunice retired in 1982, with 38.9 years of experience. Whether in a one room school house on the western prairie or a contemporary classroom at Longfellow Elementary, Eunice gave 100% to every student, every day. “A Born Teacher” is how family, friends and her colleagues fondly remember her. Eunice was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, serving as the secretary and treasurer. Eunice was a member of The Retired Teachers Association and an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church since 1964. WELCA, visitor, greeter, quilter and evangelism committee member, Messiah pre-school and exercise class were some of the many activities she loved. Eunice loved music and sports and attended her sons’ and grandchildren’s activities. Her grandson said, “I am the only umpire who had a grandmother sitting behind the plate, cheering ‘Good Call Blue’.” Eunice loved being Grandma Nasset and followed all of her grandchildren’s activities and continued to teach them reading, spelling and math while encouraging their love of sports, music, theatre and dance. Their Christian education was a priority and she led by example. A loving, caring, gracious “Lady” who loved and was loved greatly. Eunice and Erling were happily married for 56 years and were blessed with three sons, daughter-in-law, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A loving wife, mother and grandmother who was cherished by her family. Faith, daily music, love, a cup of coffee, treats and good company filled the Nasset home. Together, Eunice and Erling made the world a better place.
