Emery J. Roy

Emery Joseph Roy was born on September 9, 1921, in St. John, ND. He was the younger of two children born to Finley and Agnes Roy.

Emery graduated from high school in St. John in 1938. During World War II he served in Europe as a radio operator in General George Patton's Third Army. Following the war he attended Jamestown College, in Jamestown, ND, and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. In 1999 Emery was inducted into the Jamestown College Alumni Association Hall of Fame.

On June 21, 1949, Emery was married to Corinne Hochhalter of Wilton, ND. Emery and Corinne met when they were students at Jamestown College.

After graduating with a Master of Divinity Degree from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL, Emery was ordained as a minister of the United Presbyterian Church, U.S.A., in May 1951. Emery also attended Iliff Seminary In Denver, CO, and received a Masters Degree in Theology in 1971.

Emery's first call as pastor was to the 2-church parish of Hunter and Erie, ND, where he served until 1954. He then served the Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow, NE, until 1964. This was followed by a new church development in Cheyenne, WY, where he remained until 1971. From 1971 until 1980 Emery was the Associate Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Fargo, ND. In 1980 he served a second new church development in Wichita, KS, until 1987 when he was Honorably Retired. Following retirement, Emery served an English-speaking congregation in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for two years. In 1993 Emery returned to Fargo and was once again on staff at the First Presbyterian Church, where he was voted Pastor Emeritus in 2007.

Emery was preceded in death by his wife, Corinne, his parents and his brother, Arda.

He is survived by three daughters, Nancy (Larry) Broemsen, Greeley, CO, Kathryn (Sheldon) Maier, Clancy, MT, Janet (Fred Horn) Roy, Tuscaloosa, AL; Emery is also survived by many relatives and countless friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church or a charity of choice.
