Edward Andrew Schultz

January 27, 1954 — July 5, 2018

Edward Andrew Schultz, 64, of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Thursday, July 5, 2018.

Edward Schultz was born on January 27, 1954, in Norfolk VA, the son of aeronautical engineer George Schultz and English teacher Mary Schultz.
One of six siblings, Ed ‘Eddie’, grew up in the Larchmont neighborhood and graduated from Maury High School in 1972. A standout high school and college quarterback, he found his way to Moorhead State in Moorhead, MN and led the nation in passing in 1977. After a couple of professional tryouts, he returned to the Fargo-Moorhead area and began a career in broadcasting.

Ed had a long, award-winning career in radio and television broadcasting. He began his career at KXJB TV, Fargo. Stops along the way included: KTRH radio Houston, KTHI TV Fargo, WDAY TV/Radio Fargo (hosting radio talk show Viewpoint), KFGO radio Fargo (hosting radio talk show News and Views). MSNBC New York (hosting The ED Show), and RT Washington DC (hosting The News with Ed Schultz). While working in the Midwest, he did play-by-play for NDSU, UND, North Dakota and Minnesota high school tournaments. He hosted The Great Outdoors with Ed Schultz. Ed was a two-time Marconi award winner as well as a Peabody award winner.

Ed was a hard driver, gifted communicator, and leader whose heart and passion were evident in all of his work. His radio career was highlighted by starting his own show, The Ed Schultz Show, and being the first progressive radio talk show host to be nationally syndicated. He found a calling and duty to be the ‘voice of the voiceless’ and pushed hard for worker’s rights. He loved being in the mix and standing up for what he believed in.

Ed was a devoted family man. He married Wendy Noack on June 11, 1998, in Fargo ND. They recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. A father to a son and five step-children, and grandfather to 15, he loved to look forward to the next adventure with the family.

Ed’s passions in life were his faith, family, flying, fishing, and most recently golfing. An aviator since 1988, Ed was at peace in the air.
Grateful for sharing in his life are wife: Wendy; son, David (Kelsey) Schultz; step-children, Megan (Kurt) Espelien, Christian Kiedrowski, Joseph (Billie Jo) Kiedrowski, Greta Guscette, Ingrid (John) Murray, and his 15 grandchildren.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents George and Mary Schultz.

A private celebration of Ed’s life is scheduled for Thursday, July 12, in Detroit Lakes. Please respect the families wishes to have a private celebration with family and friends.
