Edward Lavern Mashek, 87, of Fargo, died Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Elim Care Center, Fargo, ND.
Edward was born July 2, 1927 on the family farm in rural Wyndmere, ND, to Lewis and Eva (Olson) Mashek. He attended country school in that area. He was confirmed at the Wyndmere Lutheran Church in 1942. He joined the US Navy in January 1946 and was honorably discharged in 1947. He came to Fargo later that year and was employed at the Fargo Bakery for five years before working for forty years at the American Linen Supply (now Ameripride). He did purchasing for the company in his later years.
He married Vivian Burgess in Hewitt, MN on June 10, 1951 and together they had three children.
Ed did a lot of volunteer work after retirement preparing meals for the Sons of Norway, Fargo Eagles, The Churches United in Moorhead, and the Helping Hands at First Lutheran in Fargo where he was a member. He served as president of the Fargo Aerie 153 in 1989 – 90 and was a member of the Sons of Norway. Grandpa Ed was very proud of his grandchildren as they all finished college and live the state of ND with only one in Boston, MA.
Ed is survived by his wife of over sixty years and his three children, Lynn (Steve) Johnson, Grand Forks, ND, Michele (Robert) Daugherty, Center, ND and Steve, Fargo, ND; eight grandchildren Sara (Ken Bakke) Daugherty, Brenna (Tom) Gerhardt, Kristi (Mike) Laverdure, Katie (Bo) Klindworth, Tarek Daugherty, Brooke (Bryan) Oas, and Matthew and Robyn Johnson; six great-grandchildren, Sadie, Rowan, Natalie, Chay, Paxon and Brooklyn; three step great-grandchildren, Micaela, Gabe and Riley; four half-sisters, Helen (Ray) Novontny, Lidgerwood, Carol (TJ) Spale, Grafton, ND, Beverly (Duane) Huus, Cathay, ND and Jeanette Froslie, Chula Vista, CA and one sister-in-law, Barb Mashek.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Edith Jordheim and Doris Helgeson; three brothers, Lyle, Harold and James; one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
