Donald Barnard

Donald Max Barnard, 86, died February 8, 2012, in Rochester, MN. He was born March 5, 1925 at Geff (Wayne County) Illinois. He was the fifth child of Roscoe P. and Clara Barnard. Elementary and high school education were in the public schools of Wayne County. He entered the University of Illinois (Urbana, Illinois) in 1942. He transferred to the Medical School, University of Illinois (Chicago, Illinois) in April 1944. He received a BS degree in 1945 and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in June 1947. He married Margaret Loretta Kitson of Atlantic, Iowa on August 24, 1947. He served a rotating internship and two years of residency in Internal Medicine at Augustana Hospital, Chicago, Illinois between 1947 and June 1950. He was a Fellow in Internal Medicine at the Joslin Clinic and New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts from July 1950 to August 1951. He was in the U.S. Navy V-12 program, being on active duty July 1943 to December 1945. He was a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps, United States Army Reserve, being on active duty August 1951 to August 1953. In September 1953 he joined the Department of Internal Medicine, Fargo Clinic (now MeritCare) where he specialized in the treatment of diabetes. He retired in 1985. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. During his active practice years he was a member of the North Dakota Diabetes Association, the American Diabetes Association, the American College of Physicians (Life Member), the American Society of Internal Medicine, the First District Medical Society, the North Dakota State Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. He served one term as Board President of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fargo, Sertoma Club, and the Fargo Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, one brother, Harold, and 5 children, Mark (Laura) Barnard of Whitefish Bay, WI, Scott (Ann) Botel-Barnard of Elkins Park, PA, Neal Barnard of Chevy Chase, MD, Diane (Ken) Pritchett of Rochester, MN, David (Karen Weium) Barnard of St. Paul, MN, nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter. Two sisters, Beatrice and Bernice, and two brothers, Lloyd and Haskell, preceded him in death. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, February 13, 2012 at First United Methodist Church of Fargo. Friends may call one hour before the service. Memorials may be sent to First United Methodist Church of Fargo, the American Diabetes Association or the Fargo Moorhead Symphony Orchestra.
