Dorothy E. Ward

Dorothy E. Ward died Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Villa Maria Nursing Home in
Fargo, ND. She was born in Ritchey, MT on April 20, 1917 to Elvalee and William Smith. Dorothy later moved to Fargo, ND, where her mother met and married Andrew Thull.
During school in Fargo, Dorothy and her close friends created the Round Robin, a sort of relay race for letter writers, which they continued until their 90s. After graduation from
Fargo Central, Dorothy attended NDAC, where she met and married Ralph Stevens Ward.
Their son, Steve Allen, born in 1938, interrupted her college ambitions and the family
moved to Grand Forks to complete a law degree, then to Minnewaukan for law practice.
In 1945, Dorothy and Steve Allen moved to Great Falls, MT, where Dorothy began her
long career as secretary to the principal officers of various banks, finishing in San Diego, CA from 1951 until her retirement in 1974. She continued to live in San Diego until 1987, when she returned to Fargo and lived out her life.
Obviously, she loved to travel, including trips to Mexico and across the United States and back through Canada to Alaska by train. She also loved cats--living and ceramic--
tchotchkes of all kinds, breakfast on the beach, Mexican food, introducing friends and
relatives to the wonders of Southern California, exotic hats, and baby talk, giving funny
names to everything including "Ding Bu" for her Siamese cat and "Little Buttercup" for
her Chevy Malibu. She continued her education, finishing her degree in English at
San Diego State and taking courses in negotiable instruments to further her banking
career.
While challenging, her last years were full of warmth, thanks to the kindness of the staff
at Riverview Place and Villa Maria, and to the presence of her son, Steve (Loretta), her
grandson, Scott (Deb), and her great granddaughter, Elizabeth, the fifth generation of
Wards to attend NDSU.
No Memorial Service will be held. Dorothy was uncomfortable with ceremony, however, she loved language, written or spoken and said she wanted to be loved and missed, so she would welcome thoughts and memories on the web site at www.hansonrunsvold.com .
