Dorlan Lybeck passed away quietly in his bed at Eventide-Fargo on September 13th, 2018. He was 90 years old.
Dorlan was born on 6-18-28 in Minot, ND, the only child of Edwin and Dora (Stroh) Lybeck. In 1938, Ed was transferred to Fargo, ND where Dorlan graduated from Central HS in 1946. At the age of 13, Dorlan started dating his high school sweetheart, Rhonda Hektner, and the two were married on 9-4-49. In 1950, Dorlan graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, and went to work for his father-in-law, Gus Hektner, at Hektner Insurance of Fargo, which later became Hektner, Lybeck, Erickson Insurance in 1958. Dorlan was involved with the agency for over 66 years.
Dorlan’s life-long passion was athletics. During his HS career, Dorlan played QB on Central’s state champion football team, captained three state-tournament basketball teams, and pitched a no-hitter for the state-champion legion baseball team. After playing basketball and baseball at Concordia, Dorlan played fast-pitch softball locally for 28 years as center fielder, primarily with Kallod Carpet and Hektner Insurance. During these years, Dorlan also officiated football and basketball in the area. After retiring from these activities, Dorlan continued to manage tournaments and was inducted into the ND Softball Hall of Fame in 1980. He also became an avid runner after his team-sport days. He ran many 10K road races, and in one year he logged approximately 2500 miles. Fitness was important to him and he continued to run, walk, or bike throughout his life including riding a stationary bike during this last year.
Dorlan was also active in his church, served on the council and as president at Pontoppidan Lutheran.
Dorlan is survived by his 4 children: Marti of LaCrosse, Paul and Mona of Fargo, Jon and Carolyn of Moorhead, and Karen and Rick of Mankato; his 8 grandchildren: Jean (Eston Taylor), Tom (Allie), Clark, Ann (Kevin Klein), Sara (Michael Carlson), Marion (Will Rosenberg), Nora, and Klara; his 10 great-grandchildren: Balian, Rhonda, & Simon Taylor, Nuelle Rosenberg, Burke & Quinn Lybeck, Maggie & Emmett Klein, and Solomon & Mae Carlson; and his sister-in-law, Hope Hektner, as well as his nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dora and Ed Lybeck, his in-laws, Gustav and Margarett (Drew) Hektner, Rhonda, his wife of 67 years, his brother-in-law, Al Hektner, and his sister-in-law, Florence (Sivert) Jordahl.
