Doris "Dee" Anne Sturlaugson Otto, 96, died peacefully on 7/16/17 at Rosewood on Broadway in Fargo, ND.
Dee was born on 6/11/21, one of eight children in the family of Esrom and Anna Maude Good of Sheldon, ND. Dee graduated from Sheldon HS and then from the North Dakota Agricultural College (now NDSU) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics with a Music minor. Dee taught school for several years, and fondly recalled creating and teaching the first accredited Boys' Home Ec class in North Dakota. But Dee was primarily a dedicated homemaker, baker, and gracious host to anyone entering her home. Dee also provided the glazed donut recipe for Grandma Dee's Donuts, a Fargo business started by one of her grandsons.
Dee would say that she was honored and privileged to have been married to two great men, but at different times, of course. She married William "Bill" Sturlaugson in June of 1944 and they farmed together until Bill's death in 1965. Dee later married Darrell Otto in March of 1968, and they farmed together before retiring and buying a home in 1994 in Fargo, ND.
Dee will always be remembered for her wit and wisdom, her strong faith, her hospitality, her storytelling, her laughter, her card playing, her complete enjoyment of life, and especially for her love for family (and Dee considered family to be not only relatives, but just about everyone she ever met).
Dee was preceded in death by her parents, all her siblings, her infant son David, and both of her loving husbands.
Dee is survived by her seven children, Craig (Pam) Sturlaugson; John (Muriel) Otto; Kaye (George) Topp; Bev (Dave) Flach; Phil (Nancy) Sturlaugson; Scott (Brooke) Sturlaugson, Shelley (Kevin) Wold, 22 grandchildren, and an ever increasing number of great grandchildren, all of whom will miss their Grandma Dee very much.
Dee's family would like to profoundly thank the wonderful staff at Rosewood on Broadway for providing the most competent, compassionate, and loving care for Dee during her last four months of life. Many thanks also to the staff at Hospice of the Red River Valley for the care they provided Dee as well.
In lieu of flowers, Dee's family respectfully requests that any memorial gifts be directed to either of the faith-based organizations that Dee prayerfully and financially supported for many years: Habitat for Humanity, or Red Bird Mission and Clinic (Kentucky).
