Donna Mae La Rosa was born in Walker, Minnesota on November 9, 1924. She graduated high school in 1942. When she was twenty she became a Marine and was stationed at Arlington, VA.
She married Virgil Winmill after the war and continued to live in Walker until moving to Bowman in 1950 where they became the owners of Windy’s Bar which they operated for many years.
Donna was a proud patriot and a Marine. She always greeted fellow Marines with “Semper Fi” and shared a salute with them. She also always wore her patriotic necklace.
Donna and Virgil had a great love for children and were not able to have their own, but God had a different plan as they were foster parents to several children. They adopted their daughter Jennifer in 1954 and four more children in 1963; Carol, Corey, Colby and Curtis when their mother passed away. Donna now had her hands full with clothes washing, cooking, watching many sporting events, and refereeing fights!
Donna Mae Winmill passed away at Viking Manor in Ulen, Minnesota on January 7, 2018 at the age of 93. A celebration of her life will be planned with military honors this summer at Walker, Minnesota.
Donna is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Waln, Laramie, Wyo; Carol (Terrald) Bang, Killdeer, ND; sons, Colby Winmill, New Iberia, LA; Curt (Nancy) Winmill, Fargo, ND; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by Virgil Winmill and Corey Winmill.
