Donald Bergman Myrdal died November 16, 2014 at the age of 88 at Abbott Hospital, Minneapolis, MN. He was born October 24, 1926, on the family farm near Gardar, ND, to Einar and Sophie (Bergman) Myrdal. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1944 then enlisted in the Navy. Upon discharge from the Great Lakes Naval Station, he enrolled in North Dakota Agricultural College. He graduated in 1949, with a degree in Civil Engineering.
He married Florence Tiegen in Grenora, ND, in 1950. They lived in Fargo, Bismarck, and Grand Forks and moved back to Fargo in 1962. Florence died in 1989. Don retired in 1989. He married Lillian Hall Helgason in St. Paul, MN, in 1995. They lived in Fargo until moving to Buffalo, MN in 2010.
During his 42 year career as a construction engineer, he worked for Northern Improvement Co. and Forx Stanley Engineering.
He was a 52 year member (1962-2014) of Hope Lutheran Church in Fargo. He served on the Church Council and on the Building Committee. He was a member of the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers. During college he was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity.
Don enjoyed playing basketball, softball, bowling and golf. He was a member of the Red River Valley Senior Golf Tour.
Don is survived by his four children, Jane (Paul) Boese, Grand Forks, ND; Patti (Jerry) Allen, Dallas, TX; Kay Myrdal, Huntington Beach, CA; and Donald R. (Patricia) Myrdal, Camano Island, WA; 6 grandchildren, Susan Boese (Thomas) Jankowski, Sarah Boese, Amy Boese, David Boese, Katie Allen (Robert) Bruce, and Kristie Allen; 5 great grandchildren, Mya, Caleb, and Hannah Jankowski, Beckett Robinson, and Keenan Mayes; a brother, Robert (Sue) Myrdal, San Carlos, CA; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his wife, Lillian and her children, Stuart (Laurie) Helgason, Lake Elmo, MN: Kathy Helgason (Wayne, deceased); Harvey (Jane) Helgason, Peachtree City, GA: Lowell (Anne) Helgason, Minneapolis, MN and Debbie (Ric) West, Buffalo, MN. Also surviving are numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Einar and Sophie Myrdal and sister, Jean Jensen.
The funeral service will be held at Hope Lutheran Church, North Campus, 2900 Broadway North Fargo, ND on Monday, November 24, 2014 at 11:00 am. Visitation at the church 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo, ND.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society or Hope Lutheran Church.
