Donald Mortensen, 91, Fargo, formerly of Kenmare, ND passes peacefully away on August 23, 2012 at Rosewood on Broadway.
Donald was born on the family farm at Kenmare to Andrew and Esther Mortensen on August 12, 1921.
He entered the United States Air Force in 1942 and spent three years in the European Theatre and was in North Africa, Sicily, Scotland, France and England.
On April 14, 1945 he met and married Doreen of Leicester, England and made their home back in Kenmare after his discharge from the military.
They raised two daughters, Sheila (Darwin) Giem, Saskatchewan, Canada and Beverly (Kelly) Gleque, Stanley, ND.
Donald worked as a parts man for Sandvick Motor Co. in Kenmare, and then spent two years in Seattle, WA, working for the Boeing Co. They returned to Kenmare and he resumed his job at Sandvick Motors and from there he was employed at the Kenmare Post Office for 25 years. On his retirement in 1986, he became the maintenance man at the Baptist Home in Kenmare for several years.
He is survived by his two daughters, Sheila and Beverly; seven grandchildren, Wendy Alexander, Estevan Saskatchewan, Jeffrey Giem, Calgary, Alberta, Marcy Huber, Williston, ND, Mandy Giem, Williston, ND, Samantha Jones, Minot, ND, Damon Gleave and Brandi Miller, Fargo, ND; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Ryan Alexander, Estevan Saskatchewan, Taytum and Preston Jones, Minot, ND, Payton Gleave, Harper Miller, Evan Miller, Erica Miller and Elli Miller all of Fargo, ND.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Gordon and James; sisters, Frances, Marian and Margaret and his parents.
Donald’s body has been donated to the University of North Dakota Medical School.
