Donald Hersrud

Donald D. Hersrud was born in Fargo on August 31, 1927, to Herman and Bonnie Hersurd. He attended school in Fargo and then enlisted in the Navy in 1944. When he returned from the Navy, he worked at Holsum Bakery, where he met Othelia Sprenger. Don and Othelia were married in 1947, and were inseparable for 63 years. Don was employed by Climate Control eventually opening his own business, FM Sheet Metal. He retired 23 years ago. Don, with help from Othelia and their growing family, spent nights and weekends building houses. He built and sold 15 houses in 26 years and continued after his children left home. In retirement, Don enjoyed woodworking and was proud of the many projects he completed for his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed maintaining his yard, trips to the casino, and holiday meals with his entire family. Don passed away Sunday, March 20, 2011, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. He is survived by his five sons, Brant (Sandy); Doug (Cher); Don (Deb); Darryl (Karen); Dwight (Lori); and one daughter, Cindy, all of Fargo/Moorhead. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Wanda England. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Othelia; his daughter, Marcia; and his granddaughter, Jennifer. The family requests that memorials by sent to The Alzheimer’s Association ND Chapter. Memorial Service: Thursday, March 24, 2011, at 10:00 AM, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home Chapel, Fargo. Visitation: One hour prior to the service.
