Delores Ruth Nyland
April 11, 1933 — March 19, 2020
Delores Nyland, 86, of Harwood, ND passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 19, 2020, under the care of Hospice.
Delores was born on April 11, 1933 to Dori and Velma Hillman and grew up on the family farm west of Cavalier, ND along with brothers Stanley and Peter, sisters Barbara and Eldean.
While attending Mayville State College she met Russell Knutson and they were married June 25, 1952 at Channute Air Force Base, IL. Together they had six children and lived in Bloomington, MN until Russell took a job in Fargo and the family moved to Brooktree Park, Harwood, ND. They were busy raising a family when a tragic car accident in December 1965 took the life of Russell.
In 1967 Delores married Clarence Nyland and together they had two children.
Our mom will long be remembered for her kindness to whomever she met at Sheyenne Gardens, where her customers were treated like family. The 15-minute break times with coffee and sweets was always a welcome time with her much loved co-workers. Because of her many years at the Gardens, customers would seek her out for advice on what to plant, and when asked, she would design and do all the plantings for the large decorative pots.
Our mom loved to bake and when we got off the school bus, we always knew there would be a variety of baked goods to enjoy, and with eight kids our house was spotless. What a MOM!!!
Delores is survived by her sister Eldean Newell, Neche, ND; children, Gary Knutson, Phoenix, AZ, Sue (Nick) Thorson, David (Candy) Knutson, Fargo, Deborah (Roger) Walkinshaw, Argusville, ND, Lori Jean Otteson, Aurora, SD, Nancy (Tim) Swearingen, Gwinner, ND, Scott Nyland, Harwood, ND, DellRae (Shawn) Day, Vergas, MN and a stepson, Grant Nyland, Chamberlain, SD; 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dori and Velma Hillman; sister Barbara; brothers Stanley and Peter; husbands Russell Knutson and Clarence Nyland; daughter-in-law Darcy Nyland and 3 grandchildren, Rick Knutson, Kennedy Nyland and Ryan Thorson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
