Daryl Anderson

August 31, 1939 — December 23, 2007

Daryl L. Anderson, 68, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 23, 2007, after a long struggle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND. He will be sadly missed by all those who dearly loved him. Born August 31, 1939, in Strandquist, Minnesota, to Myrtle (Hartje) and Clarence Anderson (deceased), he grew-up with sister, Mavis (Coen), in St. Thomas, North Dakota. Myrtle and Mavis survive him, along with Mavis’ husband Allen; son Ross; daughter Angela and son-in-law, Mike Cary. In high school, Daryl excelled academically and on the basketball court, even playing trombone with his band at halftimes, until he graduated in 1957. He received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering (1961) from the University of North Dakota where he was Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter president, made life-long friends, and began a deep admiration for the U.N.D. Fighting Sioux. He also met wife, Diane (Stenehjem), who survives him. They were married in Watford City, ND, in July, 1963. This union created Daryl’s second family, and many warm times were spent with Diane’s parents, Vince (deceased) and Vi Stenehjem; sisters, Claire (Hopkins) and Lynne (Ebner), whose respective husbands, Allen and Ronald (deceased), were also close friends with Daryl at S.A.E. Daryl had a close relationship with his nieces Joan, Sarah and Jillian and nephew, Ryan. Daryl, or “Big D” to friends, began his employment with Dow Chemical in 1962. He dedicated most of his career to Technical Service and Development, but he also played instrumental roles in its Ion Exchange Program and Rule 66, through his assignments that included Los Angeles, Walnut Creek, Brazil, and Midland. Known as a great mentor to younger employees while a manager in Dow’s Research & Development Unit, he retired in June 1994. Despite career rigors, he was always a wonderful father to his son, Drew Anderson (St. Paul, MN) and daughter, Dana (Ward), who resides in Scandia, MN, with husband, Bill Ward, and their daughter, Amanda, whom he adored immensely. Daryl also immersed himself in the Midland community through youth sports coaching, playing softball, the “Garden Club,” and the Trinity Lutheran Church. After retirement, he lived happily with his wife in both Sun Lakes, AZ, and Pelican Rapids, MN, where he continued to positively influence everyone he met, avidly follow the stock market and pony races as well as endlessly “tinkering” in his garage and workroom. He will be remembered by friends and family for his kindness, generosity, and perseverance throughout his life as he strove for the best of times. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30 am, on Saturday, January 19, 2007, at the Trinity Lutheran Church which is located at 3701 Jefferson Ave. A reception, also in Midland, to honor his life will follow the church service. Less formal gatherings will take place in Sun Lakes (Spring) and Pelican Rapids (Summer) for those unable to attend. The family suggests memorials to the U.N.D. Foundation Daryl L. Anderson Scholarship or a charity of your choice. (Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND).
