Dale Roger Mackenzie of Fargo, ND died on April 21, 2016 at home under the care of Hospice.
Dale was born to Ernest and Mary (Bergstoe) Mackenzie August 25, 1937, in Milnor, ND. He graduated from Milnor High School as class president and then attended Valley City State College.
On November 26, 1958, Dale married Jenny Jakobsen at Wyndmere Lutheran Church in Wyndmere, ND. They moved to Williston, ND in 1959, where their 3 daughters were born. While in Williston, Dale worked for Gamble Robinson and later built, owned and operated the Jolly Giant restaurant. In 1969 the family moved to Fargo where Dale was employed by Blue Cross of ND for 7 years. In 1976 Dale joined the Broeker Hendrickson accounting firm, which later became Charles Bailly and Company. Dale retired as a principal in the firm in 1995.
Dale was a life member and former president of the ND Healthcare Financial Management
Association where he received the Association’s Founders Medal of Honor.
In 1998, Dale organized a nonprofit called Computers for Seniors and Other Friends. Through the years the organization has donated over 500 computers and related equipment to nursing homes, senior centers, group homes for special needs residents, a new immigrant organization and individuals in need.
Dale was involved in many service organizations including Arc of ND (Board Member and “Buddy”), member and officer of the F-M Sertoma Civic Club and life member of Sertoma International, volunteer and board member at the F-M Food Pantry, and volunteer at Bethany Homes. Dale served as chairman of a committee in the Williston Jaycees to assist the ND State Historical Society in the refurbishment of Fort Buford. Among other tasks at Fort Buford, Dale and Jenny brushed 36 gallons of paint onto the Officers building. Dale has been an active member of Olivet Lutheran Church since 1969.
Dale was a kind, patient and gentle man who made friends with everyone he met. He loved the outdoors including camping and outpost fishing in Canada. Dale was an avid golfer and played many rounds as a member of Moorhead Country Club. A faithful Bison fan and Teammaker, he attended, watched or listened to football and basketball games for 40+ years. Dale was a self-taught craftsman and completed many home improvement projects. He was the family genealogist, researching the Mackenzie family tree and its many branches. Most of all, Dale cherished spending time with his grandchildren, attending and videotaping their many events. Beloved Gramps was their number one fan!
Dale is survived by Jenny, his wife of 57 years; 3 daughters, Lisa (Gregg) Campbell, Toni McLeod, and Jill Mackenzie, all of Fargo; seven grandchildren, Laura (Tim), Amy, Ivan, Greta, Jane, Anders, and Graham; many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers, Donald, Duane, Rodney and Arnie.
The family would like to thank both Hospice of the Red River Valley and the Sanford Palliative Care Team for their wonderful care for Dale and family over the past 6 weeks.
