Dale Haakenstad, avid sailor, golfer, piano player, bridge enthusiast, actuary, businessman, Bison supporter, and good friend, passed away on Tuesday, January 13 at the age of 86.
Dale was born in Fargo, ND, April 1928 to Lillian and Otto Haakenstad. He attended NDSU (NDAC) and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan.
Dale married Grace Mathew in 1951, and they lived in Fort Rucker, AL, where Dale was stationed with the National Guard (during the Korean conflict). They returned to Fargo where Dale was associated with Western States Life Insurance as an actuary, eventually becoming president of the company.
Dale served on several Boards including, Dakota Hospital, NDSU Development Foundation, Northern States Power of Minneapolis, and many others.
Dale is survived by his wife, Grace; his children, Jane, St. Louis Park; Mathew (Lisa), Minnetonka; Peter (Wynne), Chanhassen; grandchildren, Caroline and Louise Holewa; Mark and Anne Haakenstad; and Sam and Hayley Haakenstad; brother, Alan (Inger) Haakenstad, Seattle, WA; sister, Ardith (Harlan) Holly, Indianapolis, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Gethsemane Episcopal Cathedral, Fargo, ND,
