Charles (Chuck, Chuckie, Popo) Kenneth Ritterman, age 84, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2023, at Sanford Health. He was born on September 30, 1938, in Rugby, North Dakota, to Rudy and Iona (Rude) Ritterman. Chuck was raised in York, ND, and was baptized and confirmed at York Lutheran Church. He attended country school through 1st grade, York Public School for grades 2-8, and graduated from Leeds High School in 1956. He moved to Minot and attended Minot Business College. He was drafted into the United States Army, where he was stationed in France and Germany. He was proud to serve during the Cuban Crisis.
Chuck married the love of his life, Judi (Hammer) Ritterman, on December 27, 1964, at Leeds Lutheran Church. In January 1965, they moved to Grand Forks and joined Calvary Lutheran Church. They were blessed with their daughter Kristin in November 1965 and sons Kevin and Kent in March 1969.
He started his banking career at Merchants Bank in Rugby before moving to Grand forks and working at Red River National Bank, now known as US Bank. For over 40 years, Chuck worked in the banking world. He started as a bank teller and retired as Vice President of Trust Operations.
In 1990 Chuck and Judi moved to Fargo, settled in north Fargo, and they joined First Lutheran Church. After he retired, he spent his time volunteering at church, balancing the books at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, volunteering at Sanford, and spending quality time with his wife, kids, and grandkids. He was a man of great faith, and one of his favorite bible verses is John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
He was always interested and wondering what the kids and grandkids were doing or up to. He never forgot important dates, always remembered people he met, he loved to be organized, and enjoyed working in his garden and yard. He was a simple man who had a routine, was very organized, enjoyed reading books, walking the neighborhood, doing word finds, having coffee or dinner with friends, and sitting in the sun on his deck. His family and friends knew him as a kind soul (with a side of stubbornness) who cared deeply.
Charles is survived by his wife, Judi; daughter, Kristin (Matthew) Scalzo; sons, Kevin (Courtney) and Kent (Jennifer); grandchildren, Samuel and Sarah Scalzo, Lauren and Jake Ritterman, Jack and Emma Ritterman; brother, Leland Ritterman; sister, Janet Nybo; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Rudy Ritterman, and mother, Iona (Rude) Ritterman; siblings, James Ritterman, Phillip (Buddy) Ritterman, Anne (Susie) Britsch, Frank (Frankie) Ritterman, and Ronald (Ronnie) Ritterman; brothers-in-law, Donald Nybo, Derrel Britsch, Darrell Hammer, Kory Ford; sisters-in-law, Judy Ritterman, Carol Ritterman, and Karen Ulery.
"See you in the morning." - parting words from Popo to his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his honor to First Lutheran Church or Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, a place that was close to his heart.
