Carole Ann (Urness) Stalheim, 72, of Fargo, ND, died at home on Sunday, November 27, 2022 under the care of her family and Hospice of the Red River Valley after a courageous 6-year battle with Corticobasal Degeneration.

Carole was born in Grand Forks, ND to Arnold and Louise (Orvik) Urness. She was raised and nurtured in the loving community of Dahlen, ND, and was baptized and confirmed in Dahlen Lutheran Church. After graduating from Unity High School (Petersburg, ND) in 1968, Carole continued her education at the University of North Dakota and received a degree in Speech Pathology. While at the university, she married Robert LaPlant. From this union, Candace was born in 1971. In 1982, Carole met her soulmate, Ed Stalheim, and they were married on January 22,1983. With that marriage she was blessed with another daughter and son, Kristine and Jerome.

Most of Carole's professional career was in education. She worked in Admissions, the Graduate School, and as Assistant Registrar at North Dakota State University where she realized her calling. It was very important to her that the students were served to the best of her ability. Carole moved on to Concordia College (Moorhead, MN) as Registrar from 1998 until she retired in 2008. She practiced (and practiced!) reciting the names of the graduates as she deemed it unacceptable to ever mispronounce the name of a graduating student during commencement. One of her highlights with Concordia colleagues was a trip to Germany.

As a young family the Stalheim's enjoyed spending time at Little Cormorant Lake. Then as years passed, it became a summer gathering destination for family and friends. Carole especially enjoyed long pontoon rides and decorating for the July 4th parades on the lake. Grandma Carole was a master at making sure all of her grandkids were fed. She made the best chocolate chip cookies, enjoyed her summer flowers, and reading. In the fall, the calendar was dictated by the NDSU Bison football schedule, including a few trips to Frisco for the national championship games.

Carole was a very humble person, always loving unconditionally. She was proud of her children and celebrated every goal and honor they received. Carole adored her grandchildren and they embraced her love. She glowed, like a firefly, while she attended several school and sporting events over the years. She made all of us feel special; friend or family member, Carole will be remembered by her smile and kind soul.

Carole leaves behind her devoted and loving husband, Ed Stalheim, Fargo, ND; children Candace (fiancé Travis Vansickle) Philbrick and grandchildren Parker and Lauren Philbrick, West Fargo, ND; Kristine (Jarrod) Dale and grandchildren Sydney, Dublin, Vegas, and Sturgis Dale, Gilby, ND and Jerry (Marcy) Stalheim and grandchildren Gabrielle and Eliana Stalheim, Fargo, ND; her sister, Marilyn (Larry) O'Callaghan, West Fargo, ND; niece, Heidi (Vince) Williams, Brooklyn and Briggs, West Fargo, ND; nephews, Josh (Jill) Nelson, Chloe, Talia, Brayden and Aubree, Fergus Falls, MN; Cody Nelson, Camry, Carter, and Tennessee, Casselton, ND and brother Dan (Julie) Urness, niece, Olivia and nephew Noah, Roseau, MN. Aunt Joyce Urness, Elmhurst, Il and several cousins.

Carole was preceded in death by her parents, Arnold and Louise Urness; in-laws, Jerry and Mildred Stalheim; and nephew, Travis Nelson. She was a longtime member of Hope Lutheran Church. Carole's family would like to thank Pastor Kevan Smith and the Hospice Chaplin, Nathan Richman; Amanda Erickson, RN; and all the staff and volunteers at Hospice of the Red River Valley. The family is forever grateful to Hospice of the Red River Valley for their ongoing love and support of Carole and her family.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that memorials be made to Hospice of the Red River Valley, 1701 38th Street, Suite 101, Fargo, ND or any charity of your choice.
