Carol Ann Thornton

September 24, 1950 — December 31, 2016

Carol Ann Thornton, 66, died Saturday, December 31, 2016 at Eventide Senior Living in Fargo, ND.

Carol was born at Jamestown Hospital on September 24, 1950 to William Fred and Anita Amelia (Andres) Schmidt. She was raised in Crystal Springs and graduated from Tappen High School in 1968. Carol attended secretarial school at Interstate Business College in Fargo and worked for the Valley City Courthouse for a short while. She married in 1970. In 1972, she moved to Centuria, WI where she enjoyed 38 years with the St. Croix Regional Medical Center, promoting along the way from Cashier to Medical Records to Director of Quality and Risk Management before retiring in 2013.

Carol enjoyed keeping her mind sharp playing Words with Friends, computer Solitaire and Hearts (where she had named the opponents Marcus, Shannon, and Joshua!), Sudoku, crossword puzzles, and word finds. She loved to read, and in more recent years listen to books on tape. Paramount to anything else, Carol loved to spend time watching movies and playing board games with her grandkids Ry and Jae, as well as cheering them on in their respective hockey and gymnastics competitions.

Carol is survived by her two children, Marcus (Shannon), Fargo, ND; and Joshua (Gary), Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Rylyn and Jaedyn Thornton; mother, Anita Schmidt, Medina, ND; siblings, Arlyn (Sourey) Schmidt, Medina, ND; Ivan (Mary) Schmidt, Medina, ND; Eileen Hocking, Fargo, ND; William (Marlys) Schmidt, Boise, ID; Deb (Ken) Moser, Detroit Lakes, MN; Jeanne (Darrell) Rosemore, Jamestown, ND; and Sherry (Ron) Krenz, Woodworth, ND.

Carol was preceded in death by her father, William Schmidt; and her brother-in-law, Richard Hocking.

Thank you to the caring staff at Roger Maris Cancer Center, Sanford Palliative Care, and Eventide Fargo. Memorials may be made in Carol’s name to these wonderful facilities, and/or to Ave Maria in Jamestown where Carol’s loving mother continues to reside.
