Carol Elizabeth Hatlen
December 12th, 1937 - February 12th, 2024
Carol peacefully departed this world on February 12th, 2024, in the care of Ethos Hospice at Bethany on University in Fargo, ND.
Carol was born on December 12th, 1937, in Minneapolis, MN, to the late Adeline Elva (Edlund) and Harold Waldemar Frank. She grew up with her brother, Roger Frank, living in various cities, including Minneapolis, Chicago, Glenville, GA, Denver, Omaha, NE, Moorhead, MN, and ultimately settling in Fargo, ND.
Carol graduated from Central High School in Fargo in 1955 and went on to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from Concordia College, Moorhead, in 1959. She worked as a Social Worker for Cass County Welfare, Cass County Juvenile Court and on September 2nd, 1961, married her best friend, Vincen W. Hatlen, at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. They moved to Ann Arbor, MI where Vince attended graduate school and their first daughter was born. Following this they moved to Baton Rouge, LA where Vince was a professor of architecture and their second daughter was born. While living in the Washington D.C. area Carol studied at the University of Virginia.
After returning to Fargo, Carol raised their daughters and pursued her passion for helping others through various civic and club organizations including the PTA, Girl Scouts, 4H, the FM Opera Company, and the Children's Community Theater. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Metropolitan Council of Government, the Prairie Community Design Center, and enjoyed friendships and learning through the Round Table Study Club and a Thursday book club. In 1988, Carol earned her Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN and served the church through ELCA Ministry Internships in Detroit, MI and Thief River Falls, MN. Carol was honored to serve as Pastor for the Lutheran Church of McVille and Our Savior & Central Church, McVille, ND; Our Saviors in Hillsboro, ND; and Horace Lutheran Church, Horace, ND.
Carol is survived by her devoted husband, Vincen Hatlen, their daughters, granddaughter, sons-in-law, nieces, cousins, and dear friends.
A visitation to celebrate Carol's life will be held on March 9, 2024, from 10am-11:30am at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Moorhead, MN. Interment will be at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to a charitable organization of your choice in memory of Carol.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to friends and family for their love, support, and prayers during this challenging time. They would also like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Ethos Hospice and at Bethany for their dedicated care and compassion.
