Burton Maxwell, 85, of West Fargo, ND, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2017 at Sanford Health Palliative Care in Fargo.
Burton Gifford Maxwell was born to Eugene Verl and Myrth (Gifford) Maxwell on January 11, 1932 in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He started first grade in Moorhead, MN and finished in St. Cloud, MN. He attended second through ninth grade in Agassiz and graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1949.
Burton entered the North Dakota Air National Guard during his senior year and worked for his father driving truck until Guard was activated in 1951 for 21 months. In December 1952 he went back to work driving truck. He was in and out of the guard ending up with 21 years 11 months of service.
Burton married Betty Jean Woitzel on November 20, 1953 in Fargo, ND. He had a truck accident on January 24, 1954 and was unable to drive for a time. He went to Interstate Business College, and went to work for GMAC on November 24, 1954 and retired from there on February 28, 1990.
Burton was a member of the American Legion in Fargo. He went through the chairs to become Post Commander in 1976 and was awarded a Life Membership. He went through the offices of the local 40&8 and on to Grand Offices (State) to become the Grand Chef de Gare in 1977 and was awarded Life Membership. He was elected to Sous Chef de Gare in 1979 (same as National Vice Commander in the American Legion) from that to National Child Welfare in 40&8.
Upon retirement (30 years in Fargo and the last 5 years in Denver, CO) and selling their home in Denver, they purchased a home in the city limits of Ottertail, MN on Donald Lake in 1991. They sold their lake home in the summer of 2005 and moved to West Fargo. In this time they had a travel trailer and they spent their winters in Bullhead City, AZ and summers at the lake.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger days. He was also a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Fargo, ND.
Burton is survived by his wife, Betty; four children, Patricia (William) Berlin Muck, Fargo, ND; Bruce Maxwell, Gwinner, ND; Annette Maxwell, Frazee, MN; and Fred Maxwell, Prior Lake, MN; five grandchildren; two brothers, Lyle (Gloreen) Maxwell, Horace, ND; and Forrest (Illene) Maxwell, Belle Plaine, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
