Betty Ranes, 92, of Fargo, ND, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Bethany on 42nd, under the care of Ethos Hospice.
Betty Turner Ranes was born December 1, 1930, to Howard and Mary Turner of Heaton, ND.
She attended grade school in Heaton and high school in Carrington, ND. She went to Miss Woods Kindergarten School, an affiliate of Macalester College, St. Paul, MN. She graduated in 1950 and went on to teach kindergarten in Huron, SD.
She married 1st Lt. William S. Smith Jr. in 1951. He was killed in action in N. Korea in March of 1952. She then moved to Fargo, ND, and taught kindergarten until December 1953.
Betty then married Robert Ranes of Lisbon, ND, where she lived until his death in 1976, and then moved to Fargo.
While in Lisbon, she taught kindergarten for several years. She sang in the choir and directed the children's choir as a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was active in community and school activities as well.
Betty and Robert raised four wonderful children. She loved being a mother, grandmother, and homemaker and enjoyed entertaining, playing bridge, and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Robert; and brother, Gordon Turner.
She is survived by daughters, Sara Hagen (Ted), North Ft. Meyers, FL; Paula Davidson (John), Punta Gorda, FL; Carol Anderson (Jeff), Bismarck, ND; son, Richard Ranes (Rosemary), Mesa, AZ; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A private family burial service will be held at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Lisbon, ND.
