Betty A. Hunter

August 3, 1914 — August 14, 2012

Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Hunter died peacefully surrounded with her family August 14, 2012 .

Betty was born August 3, 1914 to William and Martha Bristol and she lived all but ten years in Fargo. She received her college degree at NDSU ( then the NDAC) in Dietetics. In college she was a Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Beta Kappa, member of Mortar Board and Phi Upsilon Omicron, a National Honor Society in Family and Consumer Sciences. After graduation she completed her internship at Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Betty continued her studies and after completing graduate work became chief dietitian at Deaconess Hospital in Detroit. It was there she met and fell in love with Dr. CM (Connie) Hunter who was a surgery resident. They were married in 1939 and lived in Detroit for six years where they started their family. Betty convinced Connie to return to Fargo to raise their children and practice medicine in 1947.

Betty had a deep Christian faith and was very active in the First Presbyterian Church where her grandparents were founding members. She was on numerous committees, a deacon, and one of three who established the Town Hall Lecture Series and served as the first treasurer of the Board. She was an active member of Chapter Y PEO Sisterhood for 68 years, served on the YWCA Board and served Meals on Wheels for 15 years. She loved Fargo and volunteered in a wide variety of organizations including being one of the early members of the Medical Auxiliary. Betty moved to Waterford in 2003, was active in their activities and was on the welcoming committee.

She had many friends, always showed a sincere interest in their lives and loved to socialize and entertain. She was easy to recognize with her constant beautiful smile. Bridge was always an important part of her life and she played social and duplicate bridge several times a week until she became a resident at Villa Maria at age 97. She loved to travel with family and friends. Summers were spent at Pelican Lake, and winters in Sun City, AZ after Connie retired in 1985.

Betty’s greatest love and what she was most proud was her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Dr. CM (Connie) Hunter. She is survived by her children, Jane Ann (Frank) Hyjek, Buffalo, MN; Bill (Carolyn), Fargo; Neil (Sue), Big McDonald Lake, MN; and Jeff (Roxanne), Fargo; twin sister, Jane Erlandson, Fargo; ten grandchildren, Peter (Julie) Hyjek); David (Jackie) Hyjek; Steve (Heather) Hyjek; Jason (Yvette) Hunter; Kate (Rob) Gottsch; Cecily Hunter; Aaron (Veronica) Hunter; Megan Hunter; Nate (Gretchen) Hunter; and Joshua (AnneMarie Hasskamp)Hunter; nieces, Liz Seabough and Mary Bradford; Nephew, John Bartley; and ten great-grandchildren.
