Bernice E. Torkelson, 73, of Fargo, died Monday, November 12, 2012 at Bethany Homes on 42nd in Fargo, North Dakota.
Bernice Eleanora Finger was born December 13, 1938, to Paul and Elenora (Ussastis)
Finger, in Lucca, ND. She grew up on a farm and graduated from Enderlin High School. While growing up, she was a nine year member of the Raritan 4-H Club. Holder of every office in her local club and for her outstanding record was sponsored by Sear Roebuck Foundation for the Barnes County girl's trip to the 1957 4-H National club congress in Chicago.
Upon graduation she attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa for two years majoring in Home Economics. There she met and married James L. Torkelson, a baker, on October 22, 1960 in Waverly, Iowa. In Waverly she worked for a real estate and insurance company and later a bookkeeper for a children's home.
After moving to Waterloo, Iowa, she used her creative abilities to excel as a cake decorator. In 1974, she and her family moved to Chisholm, Minnesota, where she and Jim owned and operated Chisholm Bakery until selling it in 1983. Moving to Fargo, ND, she worked for various bakeries, decorating cakes with a specialty in Wedding cakes.
In 1991, she became co-owner of Lake Country Bakery in Walker MN, with her husband and son, Brenden. In 1994 they sold that business and returned to Fargo where she retired from work due to health reasons.
Bernice loved the Lord and was active in many church activities through the years, including choir, Sunday school, and missions. She loved gardening, music, and family. In later years, enjoying any time she could spend with her grandsons Matthew and Rick.
Bernice went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 12, 2012.
Bernice is survived by sons Brenden (Sharlynn) and Eric (Chris), two grandsons,
Matthew and Rick, brother, Edward (Sandra) Finger and sisters Ardyth (Curtis) Petrich, Karen (Jerry) Blanchard.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James; and infant daughter, Kari.
