Bernice Meta Heyd, age 89, died March 14, 2023, at Bethany Homes Willow Lane Memory Care on South University Drive in Fargo, surrounded by family.
Bernice was born August 16, 1933, to Emma and Bernhard Maas in Hazen, North Dakota, and was proud to be from a hardworking farm family. Her education took place in a one-room schoolhouse. She later received her teaching certificate and taught at a rural school in Sydney, North Dakota.
Bernice married Lawrence Heyd, and they were married for 69 years until his death in 2021. Once Bernice and Lawrence married, they moved to Jamestown, North Dakota, where they started their family. In 1958, the family moved to Fargo, which became their permanent home. In Fargo, Lawrence partnered in two businesses, Heyd and Son Concrete Construction and Valley House Movers, with Bernice working in the home office.
Bernice especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, supporting the grandchildren in their musical and sporting events (never missing one), family time on West McDonald Lake, outdoor gatherings with her wonderful neighbors on Atlantic Drive, gardening, going to and winning car shows against her biggest competitor (her husband), and doing beautiful embroidery work which was sought out once she started doing craft shows with her granddaughter and great-granddaughters. She loved nature, her cats Mitzi and Lexi, and any music by Elvis.
Bernice is survived by three children, Gary (Nancy) Heyd, Debra (Larry) Moug, and Nancy (Jack) Lunde, all of whom remain in the surrounding area; grandchildren, Katie (Drew) Bartelson and Dena (Steve) Nilsen; great-grandchildren, Taylor (Grant) Mjelstad, Emma Bartelson, Audrey Nilsen, Ezra Nilsen; great-great-grandchildren, Ellen Mjelstad and Ihry Mjelstad; step-grandchildren, Jessica (Grant) Lindemann and Justin (Tricia) Braaten; step-great-grandchildren, Cruz Lindemann, Este Lindemann, and Bo Braaten.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence; sister, Stella Comer; step-great-grandson, Devon Blackwelder, and other cherished relatives. Living a long full life also meant saying goodbye to so many friends along the way.
