Barbara Smith, age 68 of West Fargo, went by many names: Bubba, Bubbs, Barbara Jean, Mona, Ma and Grandma. Perhaps the most famous of which was “Piano Barb”. For over 40 years, Barb was the friendly neighborhood piano teacher. She adored working with her students, marshalling piano recitals, and being the hit of the West Fargo Days parade.
Barbara was preceded in death by her mother Elaine Gerk and sister Carolyn Gerk.
Barbara is survived by her beloved husband David Smith, father Donald Gerk, siblings Richard Gerk (Carol), Nancy Grothe (Gary), and Judy Hansen (David), life-long friend Violet Thum, children Jefferson Vargas (Angie), Brian O. Vargas, and Tatianna Smith (Shawn), grandchildren Sansa, Sorin, and Sofia, and a countless number of “piano kids” of all ages in all the corners of the globe.
After years of living with cancer, she died at home peacefully surrounded with love and laughter by friends and family.
The memorial service will be Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Hope Lutheran Church, 3636 25th St S, Fargo. The family has requested donations to HERO Fargo: Healthcare Equipment Recycling because she always said that flowers felt like a funeral.
