Barbara Bundens North

March 28, 1935 — August 16, 2023

Barbara Ann (Bundens) North died August 16, 2023, at Bethany on 42nd in Fargo, North Dakota. She leaves one cousin, H.E. Smith Jr. of Reading, Pennsylvania, and several step-relatives in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. No funeral or memorial service will be held.

Barbara was born on March 28, 1935, in Woodbury, New Jersey, to Edward M. Bundens Jr. and E. Victoria (Smith) Bundens Giger. She grew up in South Jersey and Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1952. She received a B.S. from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, in 1956 and earned a M.S. at the University of Minnesota in 1959. She was married to David North. They later divorced. Barbara was a faculty member at the U. of M. from 1959 through 1964. She joined the faculty at North Dakota State University, Fargo, in 1965, retiring in 2000 as Professor Emerita. Following retirement, she continued to make her home in Fargo.

Barbara was a caring academic adviser who helped to shape the futures of both undergraduate and graduate students. She was a tireless advocate for enhancing dietetics curricula and started the Coordinated Program in Dietetics at NDSU in the mid-1970s.

Barb was active in several organizations during her professional life. They included Sigma Delta Epsilon/Graduate Women in Science, Sigma Xi, Phi Upsilon Omicron (honorary Consumer and Family Science Society), Junior League of Fargo-Moorhead, The American (North Dakota & Fargo-Moorhead) Dietetic Associations. She also supported and enjoyed the "arts" in the community of Fargo as well as Bison Sports as a TeamMaker.

After she retired, Barb spent time as a volunteer with RSVP at the Hector International Airport Information Desk, Hospice of the Red River Valley, Plains Art Museum, Rape and Abuse Crisis Center, and the Giving and Learning Program. She joined the Fine Arts Club History Section and shared her sports interest by giving presentations on the History of Sports in the respective country, which was studied each year. She always found time to read.

Barbara's lifetime goal was that of empowering women. She was born into a family of educated women. She supported education (through scholarships) of women; with emphasis on those interested in science. She will be remembered for her creative adventure, wit, "bossiness" (Do it my way!), and enthusiasm for life. She was an avid traveler. Barb faced and met challenges with conquered determination. She understood the importance of generosity, the strength of friends, and the grace of humor. Her presence and smile warmed many a room.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the BBN/MH Scholarship Endowment at the NDSU Foundation, the Victoria S. Giger Memorial Scholarship Endowment at Bloomsburg University, the Women's Fund Endowment of the Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation or the charity of your choice.
