Avis Mowrey

Avis Amonrud Mowery, 95, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2007, at the Waterford Retirement Center in Fargo, where she had been a resident for the past seven years. She was born in Maddock, ND, on January 28 1912, the middle child of three sisters. Her father farmed and ran a hardware store in Maddock and her mother was a nurse at a local hospital. Her family later moved to Hamburg, ND, where her father operated a farm implement business until the Depression. Avis graduated from Rugby, ND, high school in 1930, after which the family moved to Fargo. She took a job for a year as a clerk at Woolworth’s variety store and then attended beautician school. She later worked at the Malchow Beauty Shop for several years before opening her own salon, the “Fashion Beauty Shop” in Fargo. She continued working there until 1943, when she married her future husband, Harry Mowery, at the First United Methodist Church where she had been a 64 year member. Her husband died in 1972. She also enjoyed being at the family lake cabin on Big Floyd Lake near Detroit Lakes, MN, where she had been a summer resident for the past 53 years. She is survived by her sons, Garry (Pam) of Columbia, MD; Blair (Julie) of Eden Prarie, MN; Mark of Tigard, OR; six grandchildren, Lara and Andrea; John and Elizabeth; Sterling and Taylor; and four great-grandchildren, Kalay and Kiana, and Jack and Isabelle. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hanson-Runsvold. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 14, 2007, at 1:00 PM, at First United Methodist Church in Fargo 906 1st Ave. So. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 13, 2007, from 5-7 PM, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND, with burial at Riverside Cemetery in Fargo. The family requests that any memorials be sent to either Home Instead Senior Care of Fargo, Hospice of the Red River Valley, or First United Methodist Church.
