Arlis Ann McCauley, 93, of Fargo, ND, passed peacefully on Sunday, June 9, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Born during the Great Depression in Devils Lake, North Dakota, to Howard and Margaret McCauley (Erickson), Arlis spent her early years on her aunt and uncle’s farm with her siblings and cousins while her mother pursued a graduate degree in Social Work. In 1943, following her mother’s marriage to Lyle Fugle, the family, including stepbrother Andrew, moved to Fargo. Arlis graduated from Fargo High School. After graduating from Moorhead State Teachers College she married Burton J. Flick (deceased). Together, they had four children: Timothy, Margaret, Scott and Randall born just days after their home was destroyed by the tornado of 1957. Arlis remained resilient and focused on her family. They lived in New York, Chicago, and St. Paul before she returned to Moorhead after a divorce where she completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Moorhead State College. She enjoyed a successful career as a psychologist and maintained a thriving private practice.
After completing her master’s degree, Arlis married John Peter (Pete) Dosland, sharing 38 years filled with travel, friendships, and family until Pete’s passing in 2013.
Her life was marked by hard work, commitment, and perseverance. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, as well as a businesswoman and professional. Her compassion and dedication to helping others, particularly women facing adversity, made her a champion for many. Arlis led by example, imparting valuable lessons to those fortunate enough to know and love her.
Arlis is survived by her brother, Andrew “Andy” Fugle (Janice); children, Peggy Egan (Phillip), Scott Flick, and Randall “Rand” Flick (Loree); grandchildren, Eric, Emily, Catherine, Bryant, Garrett, and Grant; and five great-grandchildren, along with Pete’s children, Jacqueline (Ken), Michael (Caroline), Robert, Catherine (John), and Valerie (Kevin). She is also survived by dear nieces and nephews and a very special daughter in law.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas McCauley, sister Kathleen McCauley, son Timothy Flick, and grandsons, Andrew Allen and Timothy “Timmy” Flick as well as step-children Francis, Victoria and Joanne, and dearest friend Barbara.
Arlis will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her.
