Arlen Sommers

Arlen R. Sommers, 79, of Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010. Arlen was born on April 2, 1931 in Britton, SD to Frank and Josephine Sommers. The family moved to West Fargo where Arlen attended school and graduated from West Fargo High School in 1949. Arlen loved being involved in sports, especially football. He was proud to be captain of the successful 1948 “Wild Rice Conference Champs.” Arlen joined the Air Force following high school and served his country during the Korean War. Upon his return from the war, Arlen worked at the West Fargo Livestock. It was during these initial work years where Arlen met the love of his life, Sandra Fink of Fargo. Sandra and Arlen where married on August 12, 1960. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary with family. Arlen and Sandra moved to Valley City where Arlen founded Triple S Cattle Company. Arlen enjoyed his work and found time to support his community being active in the North Dakota Winter Show for many years and served on the North Dakota Beef Commission. For the past 15 years, Arlen’s great passion was serving as a founding board member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora, ND. Family was the cornerstone of Arlen’s life and he took tremendous pride and joy in spending time with his family. His family and friends will miss his great sense of humor and his infinite kindness. Arlen is survived by his wife, Sandra, Fargo; his two daughters, Kristie (Kent) Wild of Oxbow, ND and Amy (Kevin) Nelson of Dunseith, ND; and three grandchildren, Sommer Wild, Emily and Patrick Nelson. Arlen was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Faris Sommers of Yuma, AZ and Donnie Sommers of Prescott, AZ. Memorial Service: Monday, September 27, 2010, at 2:00 PM at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND. Visitation: One hour prior to services at the church. Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, North Dakota.
