Alice E. McFarland of Moorhead, MN, died peacefully at Palliative Care in Fargo, ND, on Sunday August 29, 2010, surrounded by her family. Alice was born on March 25, 1918, in Milbank, SD, to Thomas Jefferson Huston and Emma Fossum. After graduating from Milbank High School, Alice worked in her grandfather’s shoe store in Milbank for several years then moved to Fargo, ND, where she was employed by R&G Bootery as a sales associate. In 1946, Alice married Roger McFarland in Wilmot, SD. They made their home in Fargo and had six children. Alice was a member of First Lutheran Church for over 60 years, where she was active in her Circle, Prayer Intercessors Group, and was Coordinator of the Church Nursery for 20 years. Alice and Roger’s first home was in South Fargo until 1957, when they moved to North Fargo. They retired to Acorn Lake in Frazee, MN, in 1981, and later Alice and Roger moved to One Riverside in Moorhead, MN. Upon Roger’s death in 2003, Alice moved to Linden Tree at Eventide in Moorhead. While there, she became an avid Twins fan. Alice is survived by her children: Mavis McFarland, West Fargo, ND; Martin McFarland, Harding, MN; Sylvia (David) Chase, St. Cloud, MN; Amy (Don) Carey, Fargo, ND; David (Sherry) McFarland, Rochester, MN; granddaughters Rebecca (Steve) LaMont and Kathleen Carey, and great-grandchildren Brystin, Kayden, Weston, and Ressie, and half-brother Robert Jacobs of Milbank, SD. She is also survived by her cousins Deanna (Corky) Hanson of Bremerton, WA, and Karen (Dick) Clark of Buckley, WA. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, her son Phillip, and her husband Roger. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Eventide or First Lutheran Church, Fargo.
