Alex Sahr, 96, longtime resident of Fargo ND, passed away on April 18, 2014 at the Fargo Veterans Hospital. Alex Donald Sahr, son of Aaron and Martha Sahr was born on November 20, 1917 in Balfour, ND. Alex attended school in Balfour and after graduation joined the CCC program at Kramer, ND in 1936. In 1938 he transferred to Socorro, New Mexico and worked on the Bosque Del Apache game refuge. In June of 1942 he joined the US Air Corps and after six months of training joined the 15th Air Force and served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy as an aerial gunner with a B-24 Squadron, In February 1944 he and his crew transferred to England and completed their tour of duty with the 8th Air Force.
Alex married Carlene Jefferson on December 19, 1946 they remained lifelong companions for 61 years. They made their home in Fargo, ND where they raised their family.
Alex was employed by Standard Oil Company in 1946 as an Agent and work in this capacity until he formed the Sahr Oil Company. Alex was an active long-time member of Messiah Lutheran Church. A member of the Eagles, Elks, VFW, American Legion, DAV and Golden K. Kiwanis. Alex loved fishing hunting, golfing and his beloved Bison basketball and football teams. Alex’s life was enriched by volunteering and was nominated and recipient of the Jefferson Award in 2003. Alex’s greatest gift was brightening our world with laughter.
Alex is survived by two sons Ronald (Kathy) Sahr, Sabin, MN, Robert (Debra) Sahr, Fargo, ND, one daughter Jeanne (Jim) Mercer, Detroit Lakes, MN., ten grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Carlene, son (Douglas), his parents and two brothers and one sister.
