Sandra Underwood

August 19, 1941 — September 14, 2010

Sandy died suddenly on September 14, 2010, at her home in Fargo. She was born here on August 19, 1941, to the late Ruth (Hughes) Newton and William Newton. After graduating from Fargo Central High in 1959, she went on to complete a nursing degree at North Dakota State College of Science in 1960. She then moved to Grand Forks, where she started professional life at Deaconess Hospital and met her husband-to-be, James W. (Bill) Underwood, whom she married on February 9, 1963. Moving on to Fargo in 1965, Sandy worked her entire career until her retirement in 2007, first at Dakota Hospital and later at Innovis Health. She specialized in surgical nursing; her mastery of this field and the skill of her hands was recognized and applauded by all surgeons. Sandy's broad knowledge of nursing and operating room procedure, coupled with her warm sympathetic nature, made her a natural as a trainer and mentor of nurses. The professional book of memories which Sandy kept contains heartfelt expressions of gratitude from places as far away as Poland. Apart from the usual joys of family, friends and neighbors; Sandy enjoyed fishing, sewing, baking and sunsets at Lake Lizzie. She was never at a loss for words or recipes. She was as well an angel for many in their time of need. Her devotion to service was also shown in her long record of activity in the life of Faith United Methodist Church. Sandy was preceded in death by her brother, Dean. She is survived by her husband, Bill; brother, Gary; son, John, all of Fargo; daughter, Denise Ishaug (Steve) of Moorhead; daughter, Deborah Berg (serving army officer Major Cory Berg) of Fairfax, Virginia; and grandchildren, Abbie, Cassie, Hannah and Hunter. Funeral Service: Monday, September 20, 2010, at 10:00 AM, at Faith United Methodist Church, 909 19th Avenue North, Fargo, ND. Visitation: Sunday, September, 19, 2010, from 5- 7 PM, with a Prayer Service at 7 PM, at Faith United Methodist Church. Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.
