Mary Jo (Bjordahl) Olmstead, 60, Horace, N.D., passed away on Feb. 18, 2021. Mary Jo was known for her grace, kindness and adventuresome spirit. She was born to Joyce (Larson) and Lloyd Bjordahl in Fargo in 1961. She graduated from Fargo North High School and then obtained an associate degree as a medical secretary from North Dakota State School of Science in 1981. It was at NDSSS that she met the love of her life, Clint Olmstead. They married on April 28, 1984. Kyle Michael was born in 1985, followed by Kody Arron in 1987.
Mary Jo worked in the medical field her entire career, landing her “dream job” at Neuropsychology Associates where she worked as the organization’s business office manager for 19 years.
Mary Jo's adventuresome spirit was evident in the many hobbies she and Clint enjoyed – she was a martial arts instructor who achieved 5th degree black belt status and ran a karate school with Clint, teaching kids and adults, a scuba-diver who achieved certification, and a motorcycle enthusiast who loved riding her Harley Sportster 1200 with her crew dubbed the “Pink Flamingos.” Some of Mary Jo's fondest memories were raising her boys, time with family and friends, and motorcycle trips to Sturgis. She later went back to school and obtained another associate degree in medical coding from North Dakota College of Science.
Mary Jo is survived by her husband, Clint; her sons, Kyle, Fargo and Kody, Fargo; her mother, Joyce Bjordahl, Fargo; brother, Michael Bjordahl, Minneapolis; brother, Todd Bjordahl (Linda, along with children Matthew and Ashley), Reile’s Acres; brother-in-law, Wade Olmstead (Ilene, along with children Dakotah, Leif & Hanna), Garretson, SD; brother-in-law, Kraig Olmstead, St. Paul; beloved pets Fynnigan and Penelope; “Pink Flamingo” and best friend, Karen Gummeringer, along with Flamingos Jeff Gummeringer, Chuck Lokken, Ann and Mike Ree; and special cousins David “Bucky” Johnson (Barb) and Carrie (Johnson) Haug (Jeff).
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her father, Lloyd; and her mother and father-in law, Marjorie Olmstead Thoreson & Pat Olmstead.
In lieu of flowers, it was Mary Jo's wish that memorials be made to PanCan.org (Pancreatic Cancer Action Network).
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, from noon-1 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 1 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church’s north campus, 2900 Broadway N, Fargo. The service will also be livestreamed on the funeral home website.
