Jane Barnstuble, 63, of Fargo, died Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Northwest Medical Center, Bentonville, AR. She was visiting her oldest son and his family when she suffered an unexpected heart attack on May 29 and never recovered from surgery.
Laura Jane Burks was born February 23, 1949 to Paul and Ruby (Cobb) Burks in Cornith, MS, the second of five children. “Janie” was raised in Shreveport, LA, and moved to North Dakota over 40 years ago. She earned a BA in elementary education from MSUM. After graduation, she enjoyed teaching at the Genesis program at St. John’s Hospital. Jane married Bruce Barnstuble on January 26, 1991 at the Chapel of Bells in Reno, NV.
An exuberant volunteer and supporting actress at FMCT, she was especially known for her role as Ouiser in Steel Magnolias. A competitive poker player, Jane placed in the top 150 of 3700 in the 2011 Seniors’ Event at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. She enjoyed charming (torturing) younger players in local tournaments and wrote The Poker Pack: For the Girls’ Night Out to introduce the game to novices. A creative seamstress, Jane sewed numerous dresses for seven granddaughters and countless friends. A fearless computer/IPAD/Facebook user, Jane wanted to stay in touch and check up on her grandkids. A seasoned traveler, Jane and Bruce were on the road almost every month of the year. They especially treasured their recent excursion to St. Thomas and a family trip to Charleston, SC. A woman of eclectic interests, she pitched on champion softball teams, wrote sharp witted articles for the High Plains Reader and Card Player magazine, sang karaoke with her boys (Coal Miner’s Daughter was a favorite), cheered the Redhawks, pursued pole dancing, attempted archery, and finished the Fargo Marathon 5K this May.
A devoted partner to Bruce, a thoughtful sister, a generous mother, a fun loving grandma, an enthusiastic and loyal friend, a light that will never dim.
Jane is survived by her husband; sons, Greg (Rhonda) Johnson, Bentonville, AR; Steve Johnson, St. Louis Park, MN; Andy (Giovanna) Johnson, Kissimmee, FL; stepdaughter , Kerri (Ed Brands) Barnstuble, Morris, MN; and stepson Brent (Ingrid) Barnstuble, Morris, MN; siblings, Paul (Susan) Burks, Lexington, NC; Becky (Genia Smith) Burks, Durham, NC; Kathy Winn, Durham, NC; and Charlie Burks, Austin, TX; ten grandchildren, Healy, Jace, Luci, Sage, Mikailah, KateLynn, Cyrus, Samuel, Clare, and Sophia; four nephews, three nieces, and numerous grand-nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Service: Thursday, June 14, 2012, at 10:30 AM, at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND.
Visitation: Wednesday, June 13, 2012, from 5-7 PM, at Hanson-Runsvold.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Fargo, ND.
