Irene Johnson, 96, of Fargo, died on April 4, 2024, after a short illness. Irene was born on February 28, 1928, to Theodore and Alice (Nehring) Hoff.
She was raised on the family farm near Gardena, ND, and graduated from Gardena High School, where she enjoyed playing basketball and running track. She attended Minot State, where she received a teaching certificate and taught school before her marriage.
She married Lyle Johnson on June 2, 1957, in Gardena. They moved to Fargo, where they raised their family. In retirement, they wintered in Arizona and Florida. They loved returning to Fargo and their home on Pelican Lake in the summers.
Irene and Lyle were members of First Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, gardening, reading, and baking. Her greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved cooking and baking for us and always had our favorite desserts on hand. She was still baking at the age of 96 in her apartment at Touchmark in Fargo. She left us with so many sweet memories. We will miss her dearly.
She is survived by her three daughters, Tanis (Mark) Bartholomay, Alison Johnson, and Kathryn (Phil) Duginski; five grandchildren, Alaina (Dave) Eckwright, Tricia Bartholomay, Matt (Jasmin)Duginski, Melissa (Ellery) Bresnahan, and Mike Duginski; and five great-granddaughters, Hailey, Brooklyn and Madelyn Eckwright, Scout and Amelia Duginski, and Teddy Bresnahan. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Arlene Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; her parents; her brother, Orville Hoff; her twin sister, Ilene Walden; sisters, Betty Herbel and Doris Larshus.
A special thanks for the loving care that Irene received at St. Catherine South during her final days.
A private family service will be held.
