Helen Humphrey, 91, of Fargo, ND, passed away November 8 under the care of St. Catherine North nursing home and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
She was born on the farm in Englevale, ND, to George and Amelia (Lesser) Schoeszler. First named Helen Maria Margareta, her name was changed to Helen Mary Margaret. Helen grew up on the farm in Englevale and graduated from Lisbon High School. Growing up she worked as a waitress at Gopher Grill and babysat.
Helen met her husband, Dean, on a blind date in 1947 and they married June 12, 1949, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lisbon, ND. They moved to Wahpeton, then Moorhead, and in 1957 they moved to Fargo where they raised their family. Dean and Helen were members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Moorhead and became members of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fargo in 1958. Their strong faith and marriage made them role models for everyone they met.
She was a member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) for many years, holding the roles of LWML secretary, and circle chair of the Esther Bible Class from 1969 until 2017. She also bowled on the church league for many years. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1965 when she went to work at the Fargo Nursing Home (more recently Rosewood on Broadway and now St. Catherine North). She worked there for 10 years, ending her career as a charge nurse aid.
Helen’s church and her family were very important to her. She was well-loved and will be missed by family, church community, friends, Trollwood Village community and the St. Catherine North community.
Helen is survived by her children Larry (Joyce), Vancouver, WA; Barry (Bonnie), Minot, ND; and Charlene (John) Goodyear, Fargo; grandchildren David Goodyear, Fargo; Krystal (Brian) Haugen, Moorhead, MN; Bryan Humphrey, Derek Humphrey, Vancouver, WA; and Kyle Humphrey, Nashville, TN; great-grandchildren Isabella Goodyear, Lillian and Joshua Haugen; sister Lorraine Chesley, Oakes, ND; and many nieces and nephews, and their families, whom she loved dearly.
