Daniel Giles Lysne (Dr. Dan) was born January 30th, 1947 to Arthur and Hazel Lysne in Rugby, ND. After graduating high school in Rugby, Daniel graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 1969 with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Psychology. He then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Doctoral of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) in 1973. He practiced dentistry in Crookston, MN from 1975 to 1980 before obtaining his Periodontal degree from the University of Nebraska. He then built a Periodontics dental practice in Fargo, ND and extended to campuses in Grand Forks, ND, Aberdeen, SD, and Park Rapids, MN. He was the President of the Academy for Sports Dentistry and a fervent supporter of NDSU and its athletics program. He practiced for a total of 42 years and retired in 2019.
Dan served in the Navy from 1973 to 1975 as a Lt. Commander in Coronado, CA. Dan was stationed on a submarine tender during that time.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Julie Lysne; his daughter, Erin Payne; and his sons, Ryan and Marc Lysne. Dan and Julie have six grandchildren, one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law and two grand-daughters-in-law. Erin and Robert Payne have three boys and two daughters-in-law: Daniel and Kassidy, Luke, and Alex and Lauren. Ryan and Cynthi Lysne have one daughter, Cosette. And Marc and Kristin Lysne have two daughters: Jillian and Emilia. Dan had one brother, David Lysne, married to Marjo Lysne, their two boys, Matt and Josh Lysne, and daughter, Rachel Lysne.
Dan had so many passions, starting with his love language – food. He so loved cooking for friends and family. He got inspiration by dining in restaurants around the world, taking pictures and replicating dishes with his own twist. He could not wait to share these ideas freely, hoping others can enjoy it as much as he did. He loved to sing. He sang in choirs growing up, at Concordia, with the Choralaires in Minneapolis, and even sang with the Lettermans when their tour came through Grand Forks. He loved so many types of music, signing everything from Con Te Partiro by Andrea Bocelli to Who's Your Daddy by Toby Keith to Delilah by Tom Jones. He went hunting in Canada and fishing in Canada and Alaska with his boys, his brother, and his nephews. He went on hunting and shooting trips with friends in SD, Rolling Rock PA. He loved to travel. He saw the New Year's fireworks in Sydney Harbor, Australia. He toured up and down the Italian coast and to Puerto Vallarta for 12 years with his wife and friends. He loved to make others laugh. His jokes are legendary although most of us remember that we laughed hard and not the actual joke. How he remembered all of these jokes we will never know. And he delivered them seamlessly, with the recipient unaware they were about to hear a joke and not some story Dr. Dan heard in the news. He loved to help others. He volunteered his dental services at the VA hospital in Fargo, ND for over twenty years. He cooked countless plates of food for friends and the underprivileged. He also did so many simple acts of kindness, from dropping off food during Covid to snow blowing, mowing, and edging neighbors' yards. He simply believed in doing the right thing, and leaving the world better off than he found it. He loved his friends. He built up so many lifelong friendships over the years. And he lost many recently, too. But he is now in heaven, with a glass of something wonderful and a stogie, telling another joke (he would say 'true story') and making everyone laugh.
