Judith Lee Mahlstedt passed away on Monday, February 24th, 2025, in Breckenridge, MN in the loving company of family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Ernest Sterling and Ruby (Peterson) Palmerton, of Rapid City, SD. She is survived by Steve Mahlstedt, husband of 58 years; son Scott (Tracey) Mahlstedt; daughter Heather (Chris) Evenson, daughter Tammi (Doug Schepp) Mahlstedt; four grandchildren, Alyssa (Carson) Schilling, Nathaniel (Jenna) Evenson, Michael Schepp, and Braeden (Shelby Jenkinson) Evenson; and two great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Emory Schilling. She is also survived by sisters Jane (Mike) Moore and Pat Palmerton, and many nieces and nephews.
Judy was born on September 18th, 1945, in Albert Lea, MN. A love for learning and nature would eventually lead her to pursue a BSE from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, from which she graduated with honors. Yet, it was her artistic endeavors and her love for creatures of all types that brought her the most joy, leading her to partner in successful businesses for both. She will be remembered as a supporter of the arts, a rescuer of ill or rejected critters, a regular encourager, a loyal confidant, and a strong advocate for her children and grandchildren in all their pursuits.
A memorial service will be held in her honor on Tuesday, March 4th at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home in Fargo, ND at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to one of Judy's favorite local stops, the Great Plains Zoo or the Washington Pavillion, in Sioux Falls, S.D
