Iris Lucille (Herman) Hoglund, 94, died August 23, 2015, at Bethany on 42nd Street, South Fargo.
She was born March 15, 1921 at Brinsmade, North Dakota, to George and Elsie (Gerig) Herman.
She was educated in the Brinsmade area, west of Devils Lake, and earned her degree with one of the final graduating classes from Brinsmade High School.
She later earned her registered nurse degree from the Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Rugby, North Dakota, in 1942.
She married Willard L. Hoglund of the Prosper area near Fargo, on June 19, 1943, in Brinsmade.
While her husband was serving in World War II, she worked as a registered nurse at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, Minn., for three years. She also worked a summer at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford, Ill., during the War.
After Willard’s 1946 return from service in France, they lived in Fargo until 1948, and then lived in Ellendale, (five years), Minot, (four years), Grand Forks (eight years) and finally Fargo, where they lived from 1965 on.
Iris returned to her nursing career in Fargo, working at the Fargo Nursing Home on Broadway (now Rosewood) for ten years before retiring.
A member of Messiah Lutheran Church for 50 years, Iris was active as a piano accompanist for youth choirs and other ensembles; and a past member of the Messiah senior choir. She was also a member of Messiah’s Mary Circle.
Iris loved music, and continued playing piano as a volunteer for hymn sings and worship services at Bethany Homes, continuing until only a few years ago.
Iris is survived by her daughters, Marcia (Matt) Schwarz, Bismarck, ND, and Laurel (Paul) Reynolds, Garden City, KS, and sons, Louis Hoglund, Pelican Rapids, MN, and Jeffrey (Lu) Hoglund, Harwood, ND.
She is also survived by her grandchildren,Gabe and Joe Hoglund, Jessica Schwarz, Adam and Aaron (Susannah) Reynolds, and Ashley (Reynolds) and husband Scott James, Emma (Hoglund) and husband Moneer Rifai, and Cullen Hoglund; step-granddaughters, Kylie (Schumacker) and husband Lucas Schlecht, and Kayla Schumacker. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving Iris are her five brothers, Donovan (Ruth) Herman, Devils Lake, George Herman, Devils Lake, Dwayne (Bonnie) Herman, Devils Lake, Ardon (Audrey) Herman, Brinsmade, and Dale (Ruth) Herman, Fargo.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Willard, in 1987; son, Willard Jr., in 2013; granddaughter, Stephanie Schwarz; and three sisters, Phyllis Ellingson, Carol Esau, and Delores Bargen.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1PM on Thursday, Sept. 3, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 2010 Elm Street North, Fargo. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. A light lunch will follow the memorial service. A brief graveside service for family is scheduled at about 4:30 p.m., at Maple Sheyenne Lutheran Church Cemetery near Harwood.
Memorials are preferred to Messiah Lutheran Church, and also the Maple-Sheyenne Lutheran Church cemetery committee. Memorials to the Muscular Dystrophy Society and Muscular Sclerosis Society are also welcomed.
